A bomb hoax disrupted the operations of Ayia Napa’s recently launched casino in the early hours of Sunday morning, news outlet the Cyprus Mail reported citing information from the local police.
Cyprus Casinos (C2), the Cypriot casino arm of casino resort operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment, cut the ribbon of its Ayia Napa-based satellite casino in mid-July.
A little over a month after its opening, C2 Ayia Napa had its first major incident that required police intervention. At about 12:45 am local time on Sunday, the Ayia Napa police station received a call that a bomb had been planted at the gaming facility.
Police officers rushed to the scene and evacuated it. No explosives were found after police searched the casino. Determining that the call was a hoax, authorities allowed the gaming venue to resume its operations as normal.
C2 Ayia Napa is located in the heart of the popular tourist-heavy city and features 50 slot machines, a bar, and an on-site parking for patrons. The facility is open every day from 3pm to 6am local time and employs around 40 people. It opened doors on July 15.
The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Yannis Karousos inaugurated the new addition to his city’s tourism product on July 31, saying that he was really happy that “Melco has chosen our municipality to operate its satellite casino” and that he is confident Ayia Napa would reap major benefits from the gaming facility.
Melco Welcomes Millionth Visitor in Cyprus
Melco and its Cypriot subsidiary recently celebrated a major milestone in the tiny Mediterranean republic. C2 announced earlier this month that it welcomed its millionth visitor on July 18, 2019. That visitor was Oana Georgiana Luca and she visited Melco’s Limassol temporary casino on that day. Mrs. Luca is also a registered member of C2’s rewards program.
Including the recently launched C2 Ayia Napa satellite casino, Melco and its local brand currently operate four facilities around the Republic of Cyprus – a temporary casino in Limassol and three satellite casinos in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, Larnaca, and Ayia Napa. A fourth satellite casino is set to open doors in Paphos later this year.
As for the temporary casino in Limassol, it will remain operational until Melco’s City of Dreams Mediterranean integrated resort is under development in the city. The multi-million project includes the development of a 16-story hotel tower with 500 rooms, an expo center, a poolscape area, a casino with more than 1,000 slot machines and 100 table games, multiple food and beverage outlets, MICE facilities, luxury retail space, a spa, and an indoor pool, among others.
Melco broke ground on the property this past spring and plans to open it in late 2021. City of Dreams Mediterranean will be the Asian casino and hospitality giant’s first resort outside Asia. The property will also be the first of its kind not only on the territory of Cyprus, but also in Europe.
