  Expensive but we've had ours for 15 years now with no problems ever. (It'll go pop next week now, you watch). There's a reason why all caterers use them.

  We have a Russell Hobbs 4 slice toaster which is very controllable and consistent but very slow and makes the toast dry.

  Smeg, we have a long 4 slice toaster( 2 long slots), you can also put pittas in it and wide loaves like bloomers, it cooks well and evenly, worth every penny.

  My Classic Dualit has stopped working after 7 years and it is 4x more expensive than the Breville.

  If you want long term i'd generally find the local catering kit supplier and see what they have second hand as that stuff will be designed for turning out toast probably 12 hours a day constantly...might not be as cheap as argos but it'll probably outlast you.

  We use this one in my chip shop. I use it for my toast and also the pitta breads we sell for kebabs. We use it quite a lot and it's 3 years old any day as I have just thrown the box away while cleaning out the storage space.

  Hi,
  Just to flesh out nancyboy's Which? reviews. Which? tested 88 4-slice toasters. The No.1 Best Buy 81% Breville Colour Notes range (3 colours each a different model number) is slow, taking more than 3 mins for the first load, although subsequent rounds are faster. Which? scored it 3 out of 5 for speed.
  They say it produces decent, evenly browned toast with some under-browning across the bottom of the slices, but coverage was more than three-quarters.
  It's easy to use and also easy to clean, with few inaccessible places where crumbs will get caught.
  Small, thick breads, such as teacakes and bagels, easily fit in and are raised nice and high so you won't risk burning your fingers when removing them.
  Larger 'toastie' bread and breadmaker bread won't fit completely into the slots - they protrude out of the top, so don't get toasted properly.
  It has 'Lift and Peek'.
  The Smeg TSF02 range (7 colours with different letter suffixes) is a Best Buy that Which? say is Outstanding, with 77% but slow, well over 3.5 mins for the first round, and the browning isn't as even as the Breville. Which? gave it 2 stars for speed.
  Large slices of breadmaker bread protrude by 1.5 cm from the top of the toaster. It has a bagel function which toasts just one side at a time. You can buy a bun warmer and sandwich rack to go with it.
  The Dualit Stoneware with 70% is also a Best Buy, but only a Maybe overall, very fast from cold under 2 mins for the first round, and at least two-thirds of the toast will be evenly browned although edges are a little pale. It's the only Best Buy with 5 stars for speed.
  It hasn't got a countdown timer but it does have eight browning settings, extra lift, bun warmer, cancel button, defrost, reheat and bagel settings. It also has 'Lift and Peek'.
  They found it frustrating to clean because of the rough gritty surface, and corners where small crumbs get lodged.
  You could also consider another Best Buy with 73%, the Next Glitter 4 slot (in a range of colours), rated overall as Very Good, with the caveat that if you like your toast dark this may not be for you, as it needs to be set to the highest browning level to achieve an even golden tan. Subsequent rounds are darker though.
  They scored it 3 stars for speed and although no mention was made of bagels it is excellent for thick items.
  Which? say it isn't the easiest toaster to clean, as there are several dirt traps around the controls and on top of the slots where crumbs can get stuck. The stainless steel also needs frequent polishing to get rid of finger marks and smears.
  There aren't any better 4-slice toasters for fitting thick items than these as far as Which? are concerned, and they all have 5 stars for this including the Kenwood below, that falls just short of a Best Buy.
  Which? haven't tested the Kenwood model posted by Welsh-lad. The top scoring Kenwood with 68% is the Scene TTM480 range (4 grey finishes with different letter suffixes). It makes good evenly browned toast although you do sometimes end up with untoasted bits at the sides of the bread.
  Normal-sized slices fit in perfectly, as do small, thick items such as crumpets. However it's slow, just over 3 mins from cold, and hard to use as the left hand button is stiff. It's quite easy to burn your fingers and there's no reheat button. The right hand slots toast faster than the left and may pop-up first.
